Cookie Notice

Cookies on this site
Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. Some are needed to make the site work. Others help me see, in general terms, how many people visit and which pages they read.
You can accept or decline non-essential cookies using the banner when you first arrive, and change your mind at any time using the Manage cookies option. Declining is as easy as accepting, and declining does not stop you using the site.
This notice describes what the site loaded when it was last checked, on 14 September 2026. Websites change, so I review it from time to time.
Cookies this site sets
My website is built on Squarespace, and these are set by Squarespace on my behalf.
| Cookie | How long it lasts | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| ss_cookieAllowed | 30 days | Remembers your cookie choice, so you are not asked again on every page. Essential |
| ss_cid | 2 years | Recognises you as a returning visitor, for visitor statistics |
| ss_cvr | 2 years | Visitor and session statistics |
| ss_cpvisit | 2 years | Visitor and session statistics |
| ss_cvisit | 30 minutes | Session statistics |
| ss_cvt | 30 minutes | Session statistics |
Squarespace holds back the non-essential ones — Performance and Analytics, and Advertising — until you accept them in the banner; only what's needed to run the site is set by default.
Other services this site uses
Some parts of the site are provided by other companies. When your browser loads those parts, it contacts them directly, and they may set their own cookies or receive your IP address.
Substack. My newsletter sign-up form appears at the foot of every page, but it does not load automatically. It only loads, and Substack is only contacted, if you click to open the sign-up form. If you don't click through, nothing is shared with Substack. Once you do, it sets a number of cookies covering site security, load balancing and Substack's own testing of its forms."
Google, for the contact form. The contact form uses Google reCAPTCHA to stop automated spam. It sets a Google cookie and shares limited information about your visit with Google.
Adobe Fonts. Some of the typefaces on this site are delivered by Adobe. Adobe does not set cookies, but when the fonts load, Adobe receives your IP address and the address of the page you are viewing. Adobe's font service also loads a small tracking image on each page, which it uses to count how often the fonts are used.
These companies are based in, or store information in, the United States. My privacy policy (button below) explains how those transfers are covered.
Changing your mind
Use the Manage cookies option to change your choice at any time.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though some parts of this site may then not work as expected. Your browser's help pages explain how.
